Summer Dann received the Chancellor’s Service Spotlight Award, which annually recognizes LSU staff members who demonstrate outstanding customer service and exemplary job performance. Dann is director of the STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) and program manager for Freshmen and Transitional Programs in the College of Engineering. Dann is the first College of Engineering staff member to receive the award.

Awarded by the LSU Staff Senate in conjunction with the Office of the Chancellor, the honor recognizes LSU staff who always maintain a positive attitude; provide exceptional service to students, faculty, staff and visitors; create a welcoming atmosphere while focusing on the needs of the many LSU constituents; and exemplify a commitment to the LSU community through demonstrating high standards of integrity and respect toward others. Recipients are chosen from a pool of nominations submitted by the LSU community to the LSU Staff Senate.

“Summer exhibits the passion, drive and work ethic to be a model of the character traits itemized in any staff award criteria,” said Dr. Warren Waggenspack, associate dean, College of Engineering Academic Programs. “Her cooperation, teamwork and willingness to get the job done can always be counted on as she works with faculty, staff and students.”

Dann works to develop and manage the College’s successful NSF STEP grant programs to improve retention and graduation rates. She has had a lead role in developing, planning and/or delivering several programs and activities, including Faculty Development Workshop, Encounter Engineering (E2), Society of Peer Mentors, Project NJNeer and Junior NJNeer and STEM Night Glasgow 2012. She strives to foster an interest in engineering, construction management and computer science careers, emphasizing diverse participation, and to recruit students to LSU, especially those from underrepresented groups, including women and minorities.

“LSU has so many dedicated faculty and staff; I’m honored to have been selected from this group for this award,” Dann said. “Thank you to the committee, the nominators, my boss (Dr. Waggenspack) and the students for their support. I thank God I have the opportunity to serve and be a part of such a great university.”

“Summer is exceptionally positive and helpful to all students who cross her path,” said Adrienne Steele, STEP coordinator, College of Engineering. “She truly cares about the students here at LSU and works diligently to promote LSU and to make [STEP] a success. Many students over the years have openly admitted that they would not have graduated and/or stayed in engineering if it weren’t for Summer and STEP.”
