The College of Engineering’s Society of Peer Mentors was one of seven student organizations recognized by LSU for its continuous commitment to the University by receiving the 2012-2013 Love Purple Live Gold Most Outstanding New Student Organization Award.

The Most Outstanding New Student Organization Award is presented to a registered student organization that was created between January and December 2012. The chosen organization must demonstrate commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academics, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service and collaboration.

“We are extremely honored to receive this award, and we strive to uphold the Love Purple Live Gold standards,” said Sean King, president of the Society of Peer Mentors and mechanical engineering senior. “In the coming year, we want to continue to provide a service to the College of Engineering by developing future leaders in industry.”

The Society of Peer Mentors was started in 2012 to offer a support system for College of Engineering students. The main goal is to build community between freshmen, transfer and upper-level students, faculty and staff. The Society focuses on mentoring and leadership. Members help with recruiting and retaining students in the College by providing guidance and direction in a fun and friendly environment.

The Society embodies values including respect, accountability, integrity and enthusiasm. Mentors gain valuable leadership training and several networking opportunities while working toward increasing the number of qualified graduates.

The Love Purple Live Gold Awards are presented every year in the spring to honor nine students, an adviser and seven student organizations. Recipients are nominated and chosen by a selection committee. The award was presented to the Society of Peer Mentors on May 3 at the Lod Cook Alumni Center.
