The LSU community lost one of its dedicated faculty and researchers on Nov. 24, when Ronald Erle Sheffield, Ph.D., 42, of Prairieville, La., passed away. Sheffield was an associate professor in the LSU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and the LSU AgCenter since 2008.

He is survived by his wife Juliana Brown Sheffield and daughters, Rachel and Mary Anne. Sheffield is also survived by his father, Ronald Davis Sheffield and sister, Lynn (Kevin) Dameron, of Thornburg, Virginia; father and mother-in-law, Phil and Mary Lou Brown and grandmother-in-law, Virginia Pierson, of Natchitoches; brothers-in-law, Phillip (Ann) Brown, of Prince Frederick, Maryland and Tim (Jessica) Brown, of Covington, La., and many extended family members.

A memorial service will be held for Sheffield at University Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge, La., on Wednesday, November 28 at 3:00 p.m. A reception will take place immediately following the service. 

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Sheffield received his B.S. from Unity College in Unity, Maine, his M.S. from Virginia Tech and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 2002. His areas of specialization included water resource engineering, irrigation, non-point source pollution control and waste management

Prior to joining LSU, Sheffield worked for the Extension Service at the University of Idaho and North Carolina State University. Sheffield was active in Boy Scouts of America for many years, attaining his Eagle Scout status and then volunteering as an adult leader. Most recently, he found his passion through the Kairos Prison Ministry in Idaho and Louisiana.
