Despite tough economic times, the LSU College of Engineering’s (CoE) Heart Walk team exceeded its fundraising goal of $1,000 for the 2011 Capital Area Start! Heart Walk. Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s signature fundraising event, which promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a free, fun, family environment.

The Capital Area Start! Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 8 a.m. at the LSU Old Front Nine golf course on the Baton Rouge campus. The event is expected to bring more than 15,000 walkers together in celebration of healthier living and will raise money to support heart disease and stroke research. Participants can choose between one-mile and 5k routes.

This year’s event marks the second year that faculty and staff from the CoE have contributed to the event, and participants are excited about the College’s support.

“I think this is a great cause to support,” said Julie Mueller, team organizer and an administrative coordinator in the department of civil and environmental engineering. “We started recruiting people early in the fall semester to ensure that the team had a strong presence at this year’s event.”

All CoE faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to participate. The event is free to attend, but donations are appreciated. There will be free entertainment, food and health screenings available.
