Martin Feldman, Mr. and Mrs. A.J.M. “Bubba” Oustalet Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), was recently granted US Patent # 7,715,109 entitled “Digital Image Pointing and Digital Zoom Optical System.” The invention is an all optical system where entire images are manipulated directly by digital electronics, and in which there is no loss in the number of resolvable spots at higher magnifications. The patent describes a means of pointing a laser beam into different directions and changing the size of an image. This is done digitally and without any moving components.

Feldman received his PhD degree in experimental physics from Cornell University in 1962. After research in high energy physics at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined AT&T Bell labs, where he was a supervisor until 1989. Since then he has been a professor at LSU where his teaching and research have focused on electronics, applied optics, X-ray lithography, nanofabrication, and metrology.

He frequently reviews papers for the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology and other journals, has published over 45 papers in refereed journals, and has been granted more than 30 patents. He is the faculty adviser to the LSU chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and was the program chair for this year’s International Conference on Electron, Ion and Photon Beam Technology & Nanofabrication.
