Louisiana is known for its flavorful Cajun food and its tasty beignets, but a few students in LSU’s College of Engineering are mixing up a batch of something else that is tasty: sweet potatoes and popcorn rice!

The Biological Engineering Student Organization (BESO) is hosting its 29th Annual Sweet Potato and Popcorn Rice sale November 15-19, 2010 and November 22-24, 2010. BESO aims to develop a sense of community amongst its members who often volunteer at numerous engineering service projects on and off campus. The organization members attend the Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE) conference every year and the sweet potato and popcorn rice sale helps fund the trip.

“The IBE conference is a gathering of the world’s leading researchers and educators in biological engineering who share a passion for building a better future through the field,” explains Lane Anzalone, BESO Co-Funding Chair, “The leaders lecture on an assortment of topics including Bio-fuels, Bio-Nanotechnology, and Synthetic Biology.”

Last year BESO raised over $14,000 and is rumored amongst the university to be the longest running fundraiser on campus. With the lowest prices in town in compared to their conglomerate competition including Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie, the organization members are proud of what they have accomplished in the past and are looking forward to an even more successful season this year.

“BESO is a great way to socialize and meet fellow bioengineers. From the sale to other events we host throughout the year, it’s a great organization and a fun way to network,” Anzalone explains, “We’ve been doing this sale for almost 30 years and it’s been a blast!”

BESO is selling their sweet potatoes and popcorn rice 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day on the corner of Highland and South Stadium Drive on the LSU Baton Rouge Campus. The sale will close early at 2 p.m. on November 24th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
