Bhaba Sarker, Elton G. Yates Distinguished Professor of Construction Management and Industrial Engineering in LSU's College of Engineering, was recently ranked as one of the top 20 most productive researchers over the past 50 years, and sixth worldwide over the last decade, by a recent article in the International Journal of Production Economics.

In the article, "An Assessment of World-Wide Research Productivity in Production and Operations Management," by Pao-Nuan Hsieh and Pao-Long Chang, the researchers look at the amount of journal publications produced by both academics and practitioners. Data was considered from 1959 through 2008, when according to Chang's and Hsieh's article, more than 63,000 papers were published in journals representing the field of production and operations management, or POM.

Sarker was taken by surprise when he found out about his placement, especially since the news came in the form of congratulations from one of his peers, Leopoldo Cardenas-Barron from Mexico.

"I couldn't actually believe it until I read the article for myself," said Sarker. "I never realized I ranked so highly. This news will not only boost my research endeavors but should also serve to uphold LSU's image at the national and international levels."

Sarker's research focuses on mass production systems, cellular manufacturing systems, JIT, or just-in-time, inventory systems, resource management, assembly systems, power restoration processes, army mobility problems, military convoy movement, intermodal transportation and shuttle operations.

"Bhaba Sarker is an incredibly productive researcher and a national resource of expertise. His recognition as one of the world's most productive researchers in his field is evidence of his impressive accomplishments," said Richard Koubek, dean of the LSU College of Engineering. "It's testimony to the quality of professors teaching our engineering students, and we're proud to count Dr. Sarker among our faculty."

Sarker has published in refereed journals such as Computers & Industrial Engineering, Computers & Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, IIE Transactions, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Production Planning and Control, and Annals of OR. He is currently serving on editorial boards of the following journals:

  • European Journal of Operational Research
  • Journal of Applied Mathematics and Decision Sciences
  • International Journal of Production Economics
  • International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematical Sciences
  • Production Planning and Control

Sarker is a certified Professional Engineer in Louisiana, and is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, or IIE. He was the 2006 recipient of the Dr. David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award from IIE for "significant contributions to the advancement and progress of the industrial engineering profession through outstanding research." He has also won the IIE, Decision Science Institute and POMS best dissertation awards for 1990 and 1991.

Sarker's research has been funded by Louisiana Education Quality Support Fund, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, IBM, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Office and NASA.
