With Dean Zaki Bassiouni’s retirement from LSU, a number of alumni and friends of the College expressed interest in gift opportunities that could honor him.

One effort, led by Dean’s Advisory Council Chair Greg Guidry, will establish the Zaki Bassiouni Distinguished Professorship in Critical Thinking, an area that is of special importance to Dean Bassiouni. The professorship will be used to promote the concept and application of critical thinking college-wide, and to incorporate the elements of critical thinking into the undergraduate engineering curriculum. The College will seek matching funds from the Louisiana Board of Regents for the professorship once it is fully funded.

Many alumni and friends have made gifts to either the Bassiouni Professorship, but additional gifts are sought. To participate, contact Cathy Dodge in the College of Engineering (CoE) Office of Development at 225-578-7373 or at cdodge@lsu.edu.

A second effort to honor Dean Bassiouni was put in place by PETE alumnus Bill Stone. Through Stone’s generosity and vision, the Zaki Bassiouni Excellence in Instruction Award is being established in the Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering. This is also open for additional contributions from alumni and friends. To participate, contact Harriett Pooler in the CoE Office of Development at 225-578-8738 or at hpoole1@lsu.edu.
