Hall of Distinction Class of 1993-1994

James A. (Jim) Breaux, president and general manager, Bowater Incorporated Southern Division at Calhoun, Tennessee, was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana, on Friday the thirteenth in July 1934. Following graduation from Louisiana State University in 1956 with a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering, he returned to his hometown to begin his career in the paper industry with the local Crown Zellerbach operation.

In 1962, Breaux transferred to the Northwest, beginning a series of supervisory positions in the company’s huge papermaking complex at Camas, Washington. He returned to Louisiana in late 1965, when Crow Zellerbach (now James River Corporation) doubled its capacity at St. Francisville, Louisiana.

He began his association with Bowater in 1967 at Calhoun, Tennessee, moving through a series of managerial posts at North America’s largest newsprint operation. Following a three-year stint at corporate headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina, as vice president-manufacturing services, Breaux assumed his present position as president and general manager at Calhoun in 1986. In addition to mill operations, his present responsibilities include management of the company’s half-million acre land holdings in four states and the saw-mill complex at Albertville, Alabama. James Breaux has demonstrated his leadership by successfully managing the largest and most complex newsprint manufacturing facility in North America, with 1,900 employees.

He is a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, the Paper Industry Management Association, and the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. He currently serves on the LSU College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council. Active in business associations, he serves as vice chairman of the 1600-member Tennessee Association of Business and is past-president of Cleveland Associated Industries. A long-time supporter of United Way, he is currently serving as president of the local Cleveland/Bradley County organization. He is also on the Board of Directors of Cleveland Bank and Trust.

An active participant in community affairs, Breaux serves on several boards and committees, including: Board of Trustees, Cleveland State Community College; Advisory Board, Bradley Healthcare Foundation; Member, Chattanooga Manufacturers Association; Member, Tennessee Council on Economic Education.

Breaux is married to the former Annie Laura Hatteberg of Bogalusa, who also attended LSU. They have four children: Alfred, Jim Jr., Michele, and Steven, and Six grandchildren.
