Hall of Distinction Class of 1990-1991

Harry J. Longwell, a native of Alexandria, Louisiana is a 1963 petroleum engineering graduate of LSU. Immediately after graduation, he began his career as a Drilling Engineer in Exxon USA's Southeastern Production Division in New Orleans working on a number of engineering assignments from Louisiana to offshore California. His technical assignments in the 1960's concentrated on field application of abnormal pressure detection techniques and deep water drilling technology.

In 1969, his first supervisory assignment was District Chief Engineer of the Tyler, Texas District, which managed Exxon's holdings in the major East Texas fields. He advanced through a number of supervisory assignments in Texas and Louisiana and was named Operations Manager in the South Texas Division in 1974. Later that year, he moved to Los Angeles as Operations Manager of the Western Production Division, responsible for Exxon's interests in Alaska. There, his efforts included the unitization, development, and production of the Prudhoe Bay Field. In 1977, he became Western Division Manager, a position that covered the deep water Santa Barbara Channel development in addition to Alaskan activities. Mr. Longwell served as Operations Manager in Exxon USA's Production Department in Houston from 1980 until August 1983, when he was named vice President of Exxon's Production Department. In this position, he was responsible for all of Exxon's U.S. production activities.

In January 1986, he moved to London as Vice President of Exploration and Production with Esso Europe, Inc. In July 1986, he returned to the U.S. as Executive Assistant to the Chairman and the President of Exxon Corporation in New York. He became Vice President of Exploration and Production with Exxon Company, International (ECI) in 1987, Senior Vice President in 1988, and assumed his present position in January 1990.

Currently, Mr. Longwell is and Executive Vice President and member of the Management Committee of Exxon Company, International, which is responsible for Exxon Corporation’s oil and gas operations outside of North America. ECI has headquarter operations in Florham Park, N.J., Houston, Texas, and Scheidam, The Netherlands, and conducts business through affiliated companies in some 80 countries. Mr. Longwell is responsible for the Company’s Upstream business which includes the areas of exploration, production, and natural gas sales.

However, Mr. Longwell’s contributions do not end with Exxon; he is also actively involved with Louisiana State University and the College of Engineering. He is a member of Tau Beta Phi and Phi Epsilon Tau honorary societies, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is also a past member of the API Production Committee. Mr. Longwell served as the first chairman of the LSU Petroleum Engineering Industry Advisory Committee from 1987-1989, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the LSU Alumni Association. In addition, he is Co-Chairman of the New Jersey LSU Alumni Chapter and a member of both the LSU Foundation and the Tiger Athletic Foundation.

Mr. Longwell is married to the former Norma Jane Leonard of Thibodaux, Louisiana, and they have four sons. Harry III, a 1984 LSU petroleum engineering graduate, is presently a medical doctor in Los Angeles. Garett is working on an MBA at Tulane, and Brent is a senior at The Hun School in Princeton, N.J.

Throughout his exemplary industrial career and by his many contributions to the petroleum industry, Harry J. Longwell has distinguished himself as truly outstanding in his field. The College of Engineering is proud to welcome him into the Engineering Hall of Distinction.
